I'd like to know what the best New Order album is.

I've got Movement (bought it around 1988 on vinyl!) and Substance, but I'd like to buy a real New Order album.

    I love all their singles.

I'm not keen on electronica, but I love Hooky's bass.
  1.
    Low-Life
    Technique
    Brotherhood
    Power, Corruption and Lies

Low Life and Power, Corruption and Lies are my favourites. But Get Ready was actually the first album I heard of them, and I loved it back then.
If you're into dance you'll like Technique, it took me a while before I liked that one as much as I do now, though, even though it's a fan's favourite.

Got "Singles" yet? Nice one for all the non-album singles (which a lot of them are)

Well, Singles, Best of and Substance seem to have a lot of similar songs.

    I just ordered 4 cd's on Amazon uk, +- 6 £ each.

Technique and Brotherhood for me. I know Brotherhood is disliked by many but I love it.
  2.
My favorite is Low-Life, but if I had to choose one album for someone to buy, I would recommend Substance 1987, I think. That's what I just told a friend of mine to purchase because he doesn't know NO at all. I guess he grew up in a cave. LOL

took a while, but I love Republic now. It's an album for a special mood though, I don't always enjoy it.

    good choices:face-smile:

oh! do you have the Electronic Greatest hits yet? That's an excellent album.

I think Low Life sounds pretty 'primitive' or 'amateuristic' , especially due to Barneys singing, but I guess it gives a certain charm to it.
  3.
My personal fave is Power, Corruption & Lies, but the I think the best New Order album for a newbie must be Substance.

If you don't know New Order, get any of the albums and you will become a fan

As long as it's not Movement, fecking dull as anything.

Movement was the first one of them I bought, and I already had Substance.

    Well, I like them.
  4.
I like to think of Movement as their "transitional" time....Barney and the gang were trying to find their voice again.

Power, Corruption and Lies is a great album too. As you said, My Silent Face, you really can't go wrong with any of them! But I am biased.:face-angel:

Some of my favourite NO songs are on that album so I'm biased to this one;)
Primitive? 'Sooner than you think', maybe, but at the same time, I love that song SO much. Sure, it does scream 'recorded in the 80s' to me, too. I don't mind that at all though.

But what about 'The Perfect Kiss'? That's a jewel I think... hardly amateuristic, hehe.. Maybe you need to hear it a few times? Do your homework, Johan :p
  5.
The Perfect Kiss is my all time favorite NO song. I could listen to it 10 times a day....sometimes I do! :face-smile: TPK is anything but amateristic, IMO.

Well, amateuristic is probably not the right word. '80ies' might be a better word indeed.
    And I don't think it's a bad album.

I just think Barneys voice isn't as good as Ians.
  6.
I guess it is a matter of personal preference. I have always preferred Bernard's voice over Ian's. I like Joy Division, but New Order is where my heart truly lies. Even the song "Hurt", which sounds like it was recorded in a can and is very tin-y, I love. Bernard isn't at his best there vocally, but I still love it. As time progressed he gained more confidence as a singer, but I love his voice at every stage of his career. I guess I'm just a hopeless fan-girl.

Movement isn't a real New Order album?
    What the...

Anyway , I would say Low Life , although I prefer The Perfect Kiss on Substance ( cause it's longer , but not too long ).
And Hurt is in my top 3 NO songs , woo!
  7.
I totally agree...the longer version of TPK on Substance is the best, as is the video version at about 9:13 seconds long.

On which album is Hurt ?

I don't consider Movement a real NO album either, it's more a JD record. :face-devil-grin:
  8.
It was on an EP- Factus 8 1982. Everything's Gone Green and Procession were on it too. Another two songs I love!

www.worldinmotion.net has a pretty good discography. That's where I got the info from.
  9.
Oh...It's on Substance 1987 too, but I think not all versions of it.

I would probably go for Low-Life or Technique first. Jen, I love Brotherhood too, but I'm not sure what a newcomer would think to Every Little Counts!!

With the compilations, I would choose Substance or Singles over The Best Of, but that's probably because I've got the British version of The Best Of without the extra songs at the beginning.

Oh, come on Alison....what's wrong with lyrics like I think you are a pig/You should be in a zoo...what's not to love, right? ;-) LOL

I agree though....Technique for a new fan, definitely.

Even Bernard can't keep from laughing at his stellar lyric-writing in that song! I still love it though. It makes me laugh!

Liz=hopeless fangirl who would love Barney even if he sang the words on a wrapper of chewing gum. :face-angel:

That song was great, I love the melody and the lyrics, but I wish there was no disk-scratching at the end, it kind of ruined it for me but otherwise my 2nd fave from Brotherhood!

Heh, if Barney sang the lyrics of a Slipknot song he'd make it 10, 000 times better. :face-devil-grin:

"I would probably go for Low-Life or Technique first."

Same from me, Alison. These two are my faves- besides, I think they are good samples of this awesome discography that "newbies" are about to figure out.:face-smile:

Ditch the albums- get the EPs. All of them! Then reflect seriously on whether or not you don’t like electronic music now because the chances are you do! :face-smile:

This time I won't sound like William S Burroughs - Advice for young people.

    You could go 2 ways;

Firstly keep going on the path you started and listen to the NO catalogue in the sequential order they were made.

Secondly you could buy Technique - The Collector Edition. This is a very good album and many Angles would say the best (HARD TO DO) but the second disc has some great classic 12” singles on it, most with B sides as well which are just as good. Value for money this is well worth it.

    :face-smile:
